Responding to the War in Iraq
How shall we
respond, as people of faith?
|
The
prophet Micah voices our answer:
What does the Lord require of
you? To do justice, to love kindness and to walk humbly with
your God. (Micah 6:8)To Do
Justice
- Write elected officials
(representatives, senators, President) to express opposition
to an escalation of the war effort.
- Go to PC(USA) Peacemaking
Conference – Montreat, NC: July 3-8, 2007.
- Organize a protest march
with other churches/faith communities.
- Reduce our dependence on
imported oil.
- Publicize the number of U.S.
troops killed overseas and update regularly.
- Work for the withdrawal of
all troops from Iraq.
- Be a resource for anyone
needing to know about Conscientious Objector status.
- Challenge ongoing and
increased financial appropriations for war efforts.
To Love Kindness
- Send care packages and
letters to troops serving overseas.
- Attend seminar on April 10 &
11, 2007, on how to support veterans returning home.
- Share condolences with
families who’ve lost a son/daughter in Iraq/Afghanistan.
- Write letters to and pray
for families with relatives serving in Iraq/Afghanistan.
|
- Find ways to send aid
supplies to Iraqi civilians.
- Take part in interfaith
dialogues/conversation with Islamic community here.
- Learn more about other
cultures and faith traditions.
To Walk Humbly With Your God
- Prayer service on
anniversary of start of Iraq conflict.
- Prayers for military
personnel serving in Iraq/Afghanistan.
- Prayers for civilians,
people of Iraq/Afghanistan.
- Prayers for President Bush,
military leaders, elected officials and others that they may
wisely and faithfully make decisions for peace.
- Identify prayer partners in
Iraq: specific families, establish dialogue if possible.
- Take time to repent –
prepare a statement of apology and repentance.
- Remember the limits of our
knowledge and the complexity of these decisions being made
by our leaders.
- See peacemaking as a
spiritual discipline pursued in all our relationships.
